Picking my way through the vituperative verbiage of your post, I note, Richard, that you don't actually deal with the point that Burnham lied to the voters of Makerfield in order to become Prime Minister.

You argue that no one expects a referendum result to be respected in perpetuity. In perpetuity, no, but certainly for a generation. What cannot be tolerated is a situation where those who are unhappy with the result of a referendum demand another within a short time. Am I not right in thinking that you were among those calling for a second referendum even before the Withdrawal Agreement was signed, that is within three years of the original decision? The danger of this is that it destroys faith in the democratic process. People will ask themselves whether it's worth going to vote when their vote can be cancelled by a second or third referendum or however many are needed until the public gets the right answer. You don't have to take my word on this. You only have to listen to Burnham himself, who told the voters of Makerfield that failing to respect the Referendum would undermine democracy.

Yes, Norway and Switzerland (to a certain extent) are members of the single market. This means that they must conform to EU rules without having the power to change them. Is that a sensible option for this country? I don't think so. On that basis a second referendum would be a sham.
