Andy Burnham is Prime Minister by virtue of the (near) 25 000 votes he won at Makerfield, after which he was elected unopposed as Labour leader. This is what he told the voters of Makerfield:

‘I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU. I respect the decision that was made at the Referendum and it’s going to undermine everything I’ve said about strengthening democracy if we don’t respect that vote’.

He also said that continually revisiting the issue of Brexit would leave the country in a ‘permanent rut’.

But today it is reported by the ‘Guardian’ that Burnham wants ‘an honest discussion’ with the British public about the possibility of a return to free movement between the UK and the EU as part of his plans for a new relationship with the bloc. He said a new deal could mean that the UK goes ‘all the way’ and rejoins the EU.

The rights and wrongs of Brexit itself are secondary  compared to the issue of trust, trust in the word of the man who has become Prime Minister and trust in democracy.

In my opinion the motive for this betrayal is party political. Burnham hopes to attract votes from disappointed Remainers.
