Perhaps it's too subtle for some to comprehend, Sue, but there's a difference between his openly expressed personal wish to see the UK rejoin the EU in his lifetime and his acceptance as PM that there's no mandate to rejoin in the current Parliament before the next election.

I also don't see that incompatible with the need to be closer to the EU and other NATO allies while the US is unreliable and unpredictable in the face of Russian belligerance. and to rectify Johnson's defective Brexit deal with the EU. 

Interesting election results in Serbia (an EU candidate country) and Brazil, despite Trump's support of Bolsanaro, plus, apparently, an early Trump Truth Social post referencingl the "Indian" election! (Perhaps he needed some sleep ...)
