Steven, I think you’ve been reading the Daily Express again. They’ve been banging on about Brexit Betrayal since the day after the referendum.

Burnham has said only that he wants an honest debate about possible next steps in our relationship with the EU. He’s not made any commitment to anything beyond the red lines in Labour’s last manifesto. It makes perfect sense to have a debate about all the pros and cons of moving closer to the EU. Whether it’s rejoining, just joining the customs union, or joining the single market, or both, or merely revamping the exit agreement. Or indeed whether to have another referendum (and I sincerely hope we don’t!!).

If you had read the iPaper this weekend you would have seen a detailed report about a 50/50 split in Burnham’s cabinet between those wanting a faster return to the EU and those who are far more cautious. He’s not going to do anything in a hurry, whatever his personal preferences may be.

So there’s been no betrayal and, if anything radically different is proposed by the government it’s going to be in their next manifesto.

Meanwhile, we can all rehearse the arguments and try and stick to facts, or at least arguments based on them rather than just emotion.
