Philippa,

You seem to forget that emergency services do need to get from A to B, most of the time in emergency situations.

If somebody needs a hospital in an emergency, say because this person had a stroke, the speed in which this person is treated is vital for survival.  Visiting TfL website for transport means is of no use and it is terrifying to see that ambulances need to go the long way round to reach a hospital.
