I am not arguing that pedestrians should not take reponsibility for their own actions. What I am really arguing for is a bit more awareness by drivers of the dangers they can pose when they are on the roads. A pedestrian does take his life in his hands if he walks in front of a fast moving vehicle - and of course he would be very stupid to do so but I know it happens - but he is less at threat if the vehicle he walks in front of is a slow moving one. The article in the link I put in my last posting strongly supports the argument for slower speeds on our roads. Because then if the worst happens the driver does not have a death on his conscience, maybe just some somebody's bruises or a broken limb; a very different proposition. For a pedestrian, or a cyclist, busy roads with speeding traffic are the most hostile and unpleasant places to be, all so we the drivers can get from A to B a bit more quickly. Roads are for everybody not just drivers. I just feel that you are taking an extremely harsh view of things by saying that if you do something stupid enough you deserve to die. That you have extrapolated my comments into an assertion that I am subscribing to all that 'dogma' you seem to dislike so much, leads me to ask whether your own view is not actually the dogmatic one. |
