No. It's known as the "Causal Factor". The clue's in the name. If a car mounts the pavement or drives through a red light, that's the cause. But if step out recklessly into the path of a vehicle being driven lawfully, then you are the cause and you will have to live (or not) with the consequences. All the data says the latter is far more common than the former. Perhaps if the penalty for jaywalking were more severe, pedestrians would take more care (though I would have thought the whole "try not to kill yourself" thing would be adequate motivation). Every day, every minute, you can see idiots risking their life on the roads of Putney by recklessly crossing - ignoring the rules of the Green Cross Code that's been around for nearly forty years. We have been told the rules, and we have been given safe crossings. If after all that you still can't be bothered to look after yourself, don't expect any sympathy when the inevitable happens. And don't try and blame your stupidity on someone else. And just so you know, I'm far more often the pedestrian than the driver. |
