your comments may be partially correct, however they do not account for chance, accident or the human factor, which is where real life lives - not in some diatribe about what it ought to be. incidents do and will occur. i have sometimes been careless as a motorist and as a pedestrian. that's life. everyone's life. my friend was struck by a car (from behind), which mounted the pavement as we walked home side by side from Granard in 1978 and the memory and shock at the time lives with me to this day. it was a wonder he did not lose his leg. Later, in about 1979/80, I attempted to cross Burstock Rd and only my mothers intervention stopped me from getting maimed, as I misjudged my crossing. 12 years later, my childhood friend, Lee, a big, strapping builder, was mown down, accidentally, whilst walking home and since that day, I always check double and think of him when I do. When walking home these days along Upper Richmond Road, I am always struck by the huge volume of people, especially young, professional women, who do not even look when they cross the numerous side roads, whilst gaily gabbling into their phones or immersed in their ipods. Contrarily, I often see the worst side of motorist behaviour by stopping and almost theatrically looking, whilst they race past - school run mums and elder women are the worst. it's not a perfect world and things do happen. you would do well to heed this when reeling off data, as 'facts' and 'data' only tell you what want to see. The truth is that all parties can be as 'responsible', as the other. |
