Looking at Lytton Grove in the morning, I would never have guessed PHS has a travel plan. A travel plan is all well and good but unless it is monitored, it simply remains good intent. Personally, I think the shame and honour idea is divisive and not one worthy of pursuit. It pits neighbour against neighbour, reinforcing the notion that we can operate outside the law by having the right to be both judge and jury of each other’s behaviour. It would inevitably result in injustices being perpetrated. Isn't there more than enough divisiveness in communities and society as it is without exacerbating the situation? Reasoned persuasion is surely the better option. I would like to reinforce something that was posted a couple of months ago concerning diesel fueled busses, cars and other vehicles. Black carbon (a diesel emission) is a particularly nasty particulate and has been found to be about 45% as powerful a contributer to climate change as CO2. Why are diesel vehicles still being developed, produced and marketed? Why is DEFRA and government not doing anything to disuade local authorities and us from buying diesel fuelled vehicles? Of course it is cost considerations over environmental considerations. There is no such thing as a "free lunch" in enacting environmental protection measures and we must learn to accept that the cost of non-action will be far greater over the medium term if we do not act. It has recently been estimated (June 2011) that complementary action to curb ‘soot’ and ‘smog’ pollution could help limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees or less. Watch that space.
