I would suggest that an area of research that has been inaequate to date concerns roadside sampling of oxygen as well as NOx. It is known that the current content of oxygen in the atmosphere is 21% and can be as low as 12% in cities however, there is little to no research of the specific effects on public health. If below 6-7%, life can not be sustained and leads to death. That should indicate a sliding scale of health effects and there may well be local incidences of very low oxygen levels. With the continuing destruction of the oxygen producing "lungs" of the world (forests) and proportional increases in other gases through the burning of fossil fuels, the effects of oxygen depletion should be of greater scientific interest since although hightened NO appears to cause irritation, it is oxygen that sustains us.
