I would comment on the methodology of the report, but have not been allowed to see it. What I can say with confidence is that the measuring equipment for PM10 on the High street is not capable of making such a distinction. Unlike the gaseous pollutants, particulates do not disperse or break down in a timescale that would allow such differentiation. All it tells us is that large vehicles stir up the air more than small vehicles. We also know that the results for PHS, when available, are consistently low, and by the latest definitions. Is it really wise to chase a reduction in a relatively minor issue at risk of a rise in the standout problem? Judging from the latest Thamesfield ward bulletin, WBC seem to have reached a similar conclusion. The number one focus, by a mile, has to be addressing the busses. For now, there are also some obvious issues that can be addressed without compromising that focus: - Bus operation practices - Bus routes & stops - Road blocking, particularly by certain deliveries - General traffic management (ie roadway design), seeking smoother flow (with it more safety for pedestrians and cyclists) and I am becoming convinced that street cleaning - full wet washdown of the roadway and pavement - would have a significant effect on PM pollution, as well as addressing the filthy state of said areas.
