'Friday afternoon' (with apologies to Charles Wolfe!) “Not a drill was heard, not the clunk of a pick, / As beside those damn roadworks I hurried; / Not a workman removing the tarmac and earth / Under which those old gas pipes are buried. Could they not do it darkly at dead of night, / The sods with their trusty spades turning? / By the struggling moonbeam’s misty light, / Or some powerful floodlights burning?” Seriously, I know they couldn't work at night (disturbance to residents) but really ....! Oh, I tell a lie. There were three men peering into a hole outside the Tortoise & Hare! |
