First observations on the roadworks on Upper Richmond Road: 1/ Putney Hill was chock-a-block (southbound) at 8.30 pm on Tuesday 8th July. 2/ There is no right turn from High St into URR - not even as far as Ravenna - which is rather silly and goes against TfL's statement that Ravenna & Burston would be accessible from High St. Unless via Putney Hill? 3/ The little left-right jig from Dealtry into Dryburgh is theoretically banned, which is also silly and I bet people are doing it! Left-right from Dryburgh into Dealtry is possible. 4/ Apparently, the completion date has already been put back to November. 5/ Cyclists are warned that they are subject to the same diversions as cars. Are they 'avin' a larf?! On my walk, both ways, along URR on Tuesday, I met cyclists riding on the pavements in both directions. This is particularly aggravating, since at least for them, at the cost of a 100 yd (OK, 200 yd) detour, they could use Howard's Lane westbound, and I really believe this needs to be policed. 6/ Gerholds, next to the Arab Boy, had no Evening Standards, since the van driver hadn't been able to find his way to them! What about their other suppliers?! And those of the other outlets in that row? The eastward operation last year seemed to pass off without too much disruption but the present exercise has all the makings of a catastrophe. In Japan (or Tokyo anyway), they bring out huge gangs, who work at night under floodlights and they get the work done in a fraction of the time it takes us. What is wrong with this country?! The upside is that I will probably get fitter and/or lose weight, with no homeward 430! [Unless, of course, I'm prepared to spend half an hour going up Putney Hill and down Roehampton Lane or DHR. Or maybe I'll just buy a bike and ride on the pavement!] Philip Evison Woodborough Road Editor, Putney Society Bulletin |
