No, Bunny, it is not "totally unrealistic" to criticise supermarkets for encouraging people to drive to them. On the contrary, if we're going to be realistic we have to fact the fact that car use must be restricted in order to protect what's left of the environment. It's also crazy, from the point of view of congestion, to stimulate more car use; car ownership is increasing inexorably (partly because of the idiotic policy of increasing public transport costs): driving anywhere in London these days is becoming dreadful simply because of the weight of traffic. People really need to use their cars less and alternative methods (bus, walking, cycling) more. One of the reasons people think a car is essential for shopping is the practice of doing a 'weekly shop:' the waste that this causes is a real problem, because the supermarkets, with their BOGOFs, 3 for the price of 2 "offers" and totally bogus 'half price' offers, encourage people to buy far more than they need or will use. People throw away over £10 billion's worth of food every year, a crazy waste of valuable food, and it would be far more sensible to buy food more wan you need it rather than stocking up 'in case.' So start thinking outside the (tin) box, Bunny! |
