Sorry for the delay I had a response written then lost it in transport. I tried to get the stats to compare Putney station with Barnes but Putney Station appears to be split between four different areas on the crime map. Although they have improved the paths around Barnes station with lighting, they neglected the area during the no mow campaign and as a result some paths were overgrown and hard to navigate never mind the visibility issue. It seems as if they forgotten why the lighting improvements were made. Unfortunately Barnes saw an increase of muggings many during day light. After a couple of odd incidents I tend now to stick to main routes when cycling after dark or early evening. I not sure that crime figured are broken down to night and day. Obviously there is reported and unreported crime but there are also a lot of incidents where nothing actually happens but you sense something might and take appropriate preventative action. Safety on transport is very much an addon and not something built into the service IMO. This means that a high number of people will stick to their cars which are statically far safer unfortunately. I can't see anything changing as long as those that make the decisions get driven around, because it's safer.
