As we live in a country that conducts itself by the rule of law then it is a correct interpretation of those laws, defined in Parliament, that should decide. I have zero sympathy for those that went to fight for ISIS and little for those wringing their hands and calling for her return under any circumstances. This woman's only mitigating case is that when she went she was young, doubtless immature and easily influenced. But that being the case if the law says we can't make her stateless and cannot show that she is ineligible to return to her country of birth, then if she can make it back she has be be allowed to do so. Then the laws regarding returning jihadists or any mercenary should come into play and if she is found guilty of breaking them then she should be so punished. Good I say. And she and her family and acquaintances should be closely monitored as public protection is paramount. But the law should be the basis of all our decisions. Not a vote seeking Home Secretary nor members of the general public, some figuratively speaking 'baying for blood', and as willing to disregard the rule of law as are ISIS. |
