Even for a snowflake like me it's hard not to have an immediate emotional response of 'leave her where she is, she brought it on herself.' Having reflected on it for 24 hours, however, I think such a response will only serve to give ammunition to those who wish to provoke fear and discord and will likely act as a recruitment tool for extremism. Added to which it's not the mark of a mature and civilised society. I'm also left wondering to what extent The Times picked out the juicier comments she made, or embellished them to make them sound more inflammatory than she intended. After all, 'Girl mildly regrets what she did' is hardly headline-grabbing news! It's in The Times interests to make the story as salacious as possible. Therefore, I'm in agreement with those who say she should stand trial for the crimes of which she's accused and face the full force of the law, should she resurface on British territory. That said, I still wouldn't want us to go out of our way to bring her home. Let her make her own way! |
