I've been chasing this up for the last few months. Backbench Councillors were not told about this change beforehand, though presumably it was sanctioned by the Cabinet. Apparently it is not a change of policy but a change of practice - bins in streets which do not get daily cleans are being removed as it is expensive to send operatives round to empty them as a 'one-off'. In particular, bins at bus stops have been removed. I do not know how far it is true to say that they are magnets for flytipping - some of the bus stops are still getting the same amount of little but it is not just left on the pavement - but it was certainly financially driven. I have suggested that people in my Ward ring 020 8871 8558 to report any examples of fly tipping so that the Council officers can get a picture of the effects of the change in practice. |
