| It is many weeks now since the crime briefings, which used to be circulated to Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators were stoppped. Why? Because of apparent concerns raised by the Police over the application of the Data Protection Act. No one has yet explained to me exactly what those concerns are in spite of numerous requests. Ther is nothing in those reports which could possibly identify anyone (even suspects) so it is incomprehensible to me what possible concerns there could be. Victims want crimes against them to be publised, and residents want to know what is going on around them, so exactly whose rights are being protected here? In the meantime, no one in my area is being told of crimes being committed on their doorsteps. How on earth can we work together to help prevent crime, if even the most anondyne of data cannot be shared? What hope is there for the "Big Society" when people cannot be trusted with any information because of the rights unknown of persons unknown. I have a reasonable understanding of the Data Protection Act, hence my anger at this ludicrous situation. |
