| Can the local SNT shed an light on incidents like the one Janis mentions when specifically asked by worried residents? I live in Norbiton and a few weeks ago, we heard from a neighbour in the corner shop that there had been a string of burglaries in our road. Whilst this was heard as gossip and to be taken with a pinch of salt, it was enough to worry me, so I emailed our local SNT asking for details of what had actually happened and if there was anything we could do to avoid falling victim ourselves. A very nice chap rang me back the next day and explained that there had been one opportunistic bike theft from an unlocked garden and one possibly similar but interrupted break in. The police were keen to allay the fears of neighbours while getting as much info as possible and came round to our street the next day to talk to everyone to look for witnesses, to see if any more incidents had occurred but not been reported and to give advice on security. They also brought letters to leave for people who weren't in. If the SNT can do this on a small personal scale without breaking any data protection laws, why can't they also publish this information on their websites? I was very impressed with the work that the police were doing in our community and would not want this to be hindered in any way, ie by having to speak directly with worried locals who couldn't find the information any other way... |
