I agree with everything that has been said on this thread. No point doing a half hearted job, buses are pure evil, and as far as mini cabs are concerned....well I don’t think I can publically write what I think of them!!

However, as a cyclist for over 10 years who regularly rides through the centre of town (Hyde Park corner etc) I feel there is only one way to ride to increase ones safety.

During rush hour treat your bike as a car - I know this sounds silly and I do realise that there are many disadvantages to this to other road users, and in addition this method also includes taking a hardened approach to ignoring and not caring what comments you get.

By this I mean in busy, dangerous areas such as Putney bridge, ride down the centre of the lane, don’t let the bus crush you into the kerb and don’t let car users bully you off the road. Yes it does slow traffic, but mile on mile in such areas you will be quicker on a bike than in a car at these given times.

Research has shown that men are less likely to have an accident (proportionally to the number of riders) than women, and this has been put down to the aggressiveness that men display while riding. Now I’m not saying be aggressive, what I’m saying is make your presence known, by placing yourself so close to the kerb you will be ignored.

It is difficult and it takes a degree of confidence - though no more than it does to allow yourself to be stuck in an inadequate cycle lane hoping that the next bus that passes doesn’t squash you to the curb.
