| You don’t have to be right wing to see that these policies are misguided. Even the government recognises this, which is why it has rowed back on some of them, though not enough in my opinion. So as regards the farm tax, the threshold at which IHT is payable has been extended from £1 million to £2.5 or £5 million. On the North Sea, Ed Miliband is now allowing new drilling at pre-existent fields. And the Chagos deal still has not been ratified, while Starmer awaits a change of policy from the United States. Starmer may also reconsider his refusal to allow the Americans to use British bases (like the Chagos Islands) once Trump decides that the Iranians are unwilling to give up their nuclear programme. I would be happy if the government U-turned on independent schools as well, but as Wes Streeting said, it would be even better if it got the policy right first time around. |
