| It is not elitist but sensible to demand that our political leaders should be intellectually equipped to meet the challenges of the modern world. A degree from Oxford is neither necessary nor sufficient. But education up to degree standard does provide you with the tools you need to study economic and social questions. Does Angela Rayner possess those tools? But as I said, that is not the main reason why she is ill-equipped to run the country. Neither she nor the other leading contenders are prepared to do what is necessary to reinvigorate the country - cut welfare spending, cut taxes and encourage growth. |
