Topic: £700 million might have built some public housing in the UK, rather than Rwanda. 2022 to 2024

Quite a while, much of it under the Tories.

The UK government made several large fixed payments to the Rwandan government's Economic Transformation and Integration Fund (ETIF), which were not tied to specific per-person costs or house construction:
£120 million paid in April 2022.
£100 million paid in April 2023.
£50 million paid in April 2024.

These payments, totaling £270 million, were intended to support economic development in Rwanda and were made irrespective of the number of people relocated. The "integration package" for each individual, which includes accommodation costs, would have been paid on top of this.

It is also important to note:
No asylum seekers were ever forcibly sent to Rwanda under the policy before it was cancelled by the new UK government in July 2024, though a few people went voluntarily.

The total cost of the failed scheme to the UK taxpayer was estimated at around £700 million by the current Home Secretary, covering various expenses including payments to Rwanda, legal fees, and staff costs.

I suppose these newly announced housing schemes might at least leave some new housing built in the UK.
