Here is an explanatory para on the need to recycle food waste from this Consultation: "Municipal food waste collections will reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill, where it releases harmful greenhouse gases, helping to achieve our Net Zero strategy target to eliminate biodegradable waste sent to landfill from 2028. Instead, where food waste is collected separately, it can be reprocessed to create organic fertiliser and biogas, which can be used to generate electricity, bolstering our energy security." Food waste collections are also supposed to be coming in for businesses together with extended producer responsibility for those putting packaging on the market. The less waste we make the less we have to dispose of - and we can save money too by making some small changes. (With us it was to be more careful with bread and either freeze half a large loaf or to buy smaller loaves (( it's very irritating that smaller loaves often cost about the same or more than a larger one)). BTW: Hot weather can speed up the life cycle of flies - so try to make extra sure you cover food and also quickly clear food off plates into the food waste bin. Flies smell food and everything else with their feet! |
