I'm not convinced this story was ever about the environment. There seems to be a tendency now to tag a bigger or more topical issue on to a campaign in order to win wider support.

In the long term it may weaken the argument for keeping buildings that are not energy efficient and have limited scope for improvement.

If the replacement building used a few percentages of the existing building's energy, bringing the time where it saves energy overall much sooner, would those that campaigned have supported its replacement???
