Walking along Beverley Path towards the Thames this afternoon I encountered the new works for the Thames Tunnel. Nothing surprising in that. What was a shock was the amount of land alongside the path that has been “swallowed” by Thames Water’s contractors. There is now a concrete base which is at least 2 metres inside where the old wire fence designating the old boundary with the Barn Elms playing fields existed. On two-thirds of this concrete base huge blocks have been placed, two blocks high. All built on what I assume is still Putney Common land. For roughly two or three hundred metres opposite the Weir and the Brook the width of the path has been reduced, made even narrower by the temporary metal fencing left on the inside. As far as I can see on the WPCC website there is absolutely no information on why this is happening. Did the Conservators give permission? If so, did they get some recompense in money or kind for the incursion? Is it permanent? And why weren’t residents told what was happening. Oh sorry, we’re talking about Simon Lee and his timorous “open and transparent” Conservators here. Why should I be surprised? Nick |
