This issue has been dragged up to ensure that we get the worse of all worlds trying to keep us in a customs union over which we have no say and paying for access to the single market. I do think the efta/ eea option would have been perfectly sensible as a 5 year placeholder and would have caused a far smoother exit. Staying in the customs union is barmy though; not even Norway does that. The.choice is not between zero border and rock hard border, but the maybot with her no border position has allowed herself to be played as in so much here. Of course we should expect some border regime to transition or if Ireland doesn’t want to accept that then it has other options (unification or withdrawal from the EU itself - I understand however that the Eu have paid the Irish a lot of money whilst taking a lot from the U.K. so no wonder they are more pro EU) |
