I have heard that each Freedom Pass costs Wandsworth £500 a year.  The tracking information stored in each card can be of great use to the police (and no doubt other 'official bodies') and I heard another story about a murderer caught after the victim was found with an Oyster card in his pocket.  They were able to trace where he bought it, where he had used it and when they went to the shop where he had bought it they got his name and address, went calling and a close relative was arrested soon after. Big Brother at work or a useful tool in the fight against crime?  A bit like the argument about CCTV but food for thought for those who do not want others to know what they are up to!
