I also don't buy the argument that people who lived beyond their means, bought expensive goods, holidays etc on credit and took out 110% mortgages were simply victims of banks thrusting credit down their throat. Too many people, companies (and banks) in this country lived beyond their means in the vain hope that economic growth would go on forever. It was always going to come to an end at some stage, hopefully now everyone will learn to live a little more prudently and more within their means... ...but (and I can never resist a dig at good ol' Gordy), Wednesday's PBR suggests that government hasn't learnt anything at all and we'll continue to borrow at unprecedented (and unsustainable levels) until, well who knows, but continuing along these lines will only (in my 'umble opinion) lead to things getting worse before they get better. It will be interestnig to see how the Irish economy fares in the next few months - now that is what I call bold government and real leadership. |
