Why should someone pay more than half their earnings in income tax? I'd put it the other way round, and say how can you possibly justify paying someone £2 million, or £3 million (and that on top of their normal salary!)? What possible benefit does someone get from an extra one, or two million pounds? What could they actually spend it on? We're talking about sums that are way above what anyone could possibly need to maintain a decent lifestyle, and it's the disparity between this and the amounts earned by normal people doing proper jobs that is so damaging socially. And it's not a joke to link maximum pay to the PM's: I'm referring to the office of Prime Minister, not to the particular individual who is presently occupying it (probably for not much longer), who we can agree has made a complete mess of it, just as he made a complete mess of his spell as Chancellor. |
