I think this illustrates the problem with Adam's example: would you believe someone who offered you a deal like this? I think a better analogy would be the banker who, in return for your lending him £10,000, offers to pay you back £11,000 at the end of a week. I wouldn't believe that either, not least because it's my money the banker would be gambling with.
