Demographics can be pretty difficult to get your head round I'll admit. Birth control will indeed limit population growth - but you need to get fairly draconian to cope with a baby boom - enforced one child policy , sterilisation and all of that - and it takes a long time to work - look how long it took China to stabilise its population. Population growth is like a supertanker, taking a very long time to slow its course. The demand for housing/household formation 20-30 years hence is already set by children already born and living in their parents homes. The only way to reduce this is to kill some of them. Aside from the effect of children growing up, the UK's population is forecast to grow from about 60 million to about 70 million over the next 20 years or so. Immigration has a contribution to this and if you are pro-UKIP you might claim that the growth would be less if we left the EU, although you would need to explain away also the effect of people leaving the UK to live in the EU and the effect of non-EU migration, which over the long term has been greater than that from the EU. Enforced sterilisation, contols over immigration greater than the BNP's dreams or build more houses, take your pick. But get real. |
