This has gone off thread and I am probably guilty of leading it that way. The subject concerns the decision of the Commons Commissioners not to allow the paving over of a footpath for the benefit cyclists. Where is the argument against that decision? I trust you are one of the considerate cyclists Vanessa and as an ex-cyclist, fully understand your anger with inconsiderate drivers. Nevertheless, your experience does not disuade you from choosing to cycle. Whether that should be described as bravery or loonacy is open to question. The balance of traffic on our roads, rail and tube is basically self regulating in so far as we have freedom to make a choice of mode of transport. Just please don't fall into the self righteousness trap of believing that your chosen mode is superior and that others should be inconvenienced or endangered by your choice. A little off thread; I support the campaign for legalisation of Segways on our roads. I found them safer (riders are far more visible) and far more responsive/quicker to stop than a bicycle. There are numerous benefits over car, bus, train, tube, motorcycle and cycling and I would love to see at least a trial programme of legalisation but I do not expect preferential treatment for those who choose to use them. |
