The cyclist lobby has been disproportionately influential on local and national governments and have been getting preferential treatment for too long, IMHO. Like many, I have found the behaviour of too many cyclists in our area anti-social, selfish and downright dangerous. I am not talking about parents supervising children here but the testosterone fuelled maniacs who believe their needs are more important than others and justify everything by claiming they are eco-friendly and keeping fit; as though I should care about their personal health. Build a paved path so cyclists can go faster and the next thing will be demands on health & safety grounds for lighting it and WBC Highways Dept will demand providing fencing and metal barriers at each end and signs everywhere. Cycles make the mud by churning up the soil with their wheels; as anyone can see for themselves over the coming months. The conservators have made the right decision. Footpaths for pedestrians, bridleways for horses and no vehicles (including cycles, please) in parks and commons! The best exercise, within most people's capability, young or old is a brisk walk and not a cycle ride. BAN THE BIKE on Wimbledon and Putney Commons! |
