I saw the SNT stopping cyclists yesterday about 4.30 outside Methodist church. Great respect for what they are trying to do, but I'm afraid they are fighting a losing battle, just as many cyclists on pavement today, if not more. Given cyclists will break the law and the police won't be there to catch them, perhaps we should just give in and make the south side pavement a cycle lane, with north side for pedestrians? Matt's point re cars is a good one, have seen numerous turn right out of Dryburgh Road and speed like mad to avoid oncoming traffic - yesterday one completely ignored the red light at the crossing, narrowly missing my wife, her friend and 3 kids. The answer here would be to extend the closure further to the west along URR, maybe to the bus stop or a bit further; the distance would then be too far to tempt people to take a chance. Not really sure why the people who design the roadworks don't anticipate this behaviour - they must live in a different world to me if they assume people will adhere to no entry signs and diversions. Last point, the temporary traffic lights set up on LRR near the Spencer Arms are a nice touch to add to the general chaos - good planning once again! |
