The real bottleneck at present appears to be the traffic lights at the intersection of Putney Hill with Chartfield Avenue, where the situation is being exacerbated by traffic going up the Hill seeking to turn right into Chartfield. I am not sure whether this is technically possible, but if the works are to continue for 4 months, it might be sensible to change the sequence to give much longer green periods to traffic going up the Hill, to enable it to clear the area generally. This would have to be at the expense of the pedestrian sequence, the downhill sequence [which in the busiest times of day is choked anyhow], and the sequence for traffic leaving Chartfield. There is an increased flow along Cambalt Road, with traffic also diverting that way, but this is one of the quietest roads in the area, and is not significant. The lesson from the winter closure 6 months ago was that after a while, drivers grasp that Putney has become effectively a 'no-go' area, and divert well away. Hopefully this state of affairs will obtain shortly. |
