"Who on earth thought they would be a good idea, blurring the boundary between pavement and road??!!" It IS a good idea, because blurring the boundary is a positive aid to more responsible sharing of the road space by both pedestrians and drivers. The fact that drivers have to cross a raised pavement makes them more aware of the dangers of conflict with pedestrians. This was demonstrated to be true in the Netherlands long before the same technique was used in the UK. There is a similar crossing on Chiswick High Road which I use often as a pedestrian, and it works! It helps if you approach the crossing, whether driving or walking, with the intention of considerately sharing the space without thinking of "right of way". |
