On the front page of SW15 is a news item on the barrier and revenue. There are also a couple of pictures, (taken by me) I hung around the barrier for less than 40 minutes, so that I could get a decent idea of what was going on. I photographed over 30 cars driving through the "no entry" and around 10 or more canned their manoeuvre for whatever reason. There was one very near miss when a van turned from the URR, stopped suddenly and immediately started to reverse out into the URR; he very nearly took out two pedestrians crossing who had stepped out behind him after turning, he clearly could not see them. A quick calculation, if the number of cars ignoring the signs this morning is anything to go by, (and its August) would suggest that 100 cars a day ignore the signs, or 33 an hour. 100 cars x 5 days x 52 weeks = 26,000 unlawful turns a year with the "virtual barrier" + risk of serious accident 0 cars x 5 days x 52 weeks = 0 unlawful turns a year with the physical barrier and little risk of serious accident Go figure Wandsworth... The chances of getting a PCN are about 16 / 1 If 100% of the 26,000 got a PCN the revenue to Tfl is £1,690,000 / year or £32,500 / week or £6,500 / day TfL are taking a few hundred a week, and some days £0 Go figure TfL... PS the grey car in the picture on the front page did drive through from the URR into Dryburgh. It then turned around to drive out, but stopped reversed and the started a five point turn with me taking his photo. The car then turned on his blue lights as he was an unmarked police car, with a uniformed officer. I asked him if he knew that he had broken the law and he replied "its only from this direction" then "I am a police officer" then "this is not my patch". I ticked him off and told him not to do it again. PPS a passerby asked me what I was doing, a young woman clearly on her way to the gym. I explained that I wasn't happy about the virtual barrier, and she said excitedly "neither am I, it is like sooo inconvenient". I explained it was a road safety thing due to Dryburgh and Erpingham being a rat run, and the primary schools etc. She wasn't buying this and looking around said in a peeved voice I don't see any children. I pointed out it was August. She replied that I clearly had nothing better to do. Fair point. Go figure Lycra Woman... |
