It seems that the intention has always been to stop motor vehicles using the road as a rat run. The old barrier used to be passable on the road by bicycles (there was a gap in the middle) so I'd assume that they're just going to ignore cyclists (especially since they can't identify them from a camera). I can't find any pictures of what the old barriers used to look like when shut (or what the sign said, all of the pictures I can find have it covered up). Anyone have one? Maybe they'll stick up a "Except cycles" sign under the "No Entry" bit but then that's confusing when the no entry sign is not lit. The barriers on Lower Common South/Hallam Road did have a blue cycling sign to allow bypass by bikes: https://goo.gl/maps/3X1Nyw9Szrk If you're really worried about it then dismount and push the bike along the pavement past the signs then remount and cycle on. |
