This was the Council's statement from earlier today.  With 450 miles of pavement priority is given in the first instance to stations, and public buildings like schools, hospitals and libraries etc.

STARTS

"Cold weather update

Wandsworth gritting crews are working around the clock to treat the boroughs roads and pavements.

Although specialist vehicles are used to grit the road surface, pavements must be treated by hand.

Main roads and town centre footpaths are treated as a priority with particular attention paid to entrances outside tube and railway stations, hospitals, OAP day centres, schools, care homes, clinics and nurseries.

The council is responsible for more than 200 miles of road surface and 450 miles of footpaths and pavements.

The gritting of borough red routes, including pavements, is managed by Transport for London.

The council's head of operational services Kevin Power said:

"Since we received the first warnings towards the end of last week we have been working to ensure that roads are properly treated. Our main focus is on keeping the borough's main routes clear and making it possible for people to get about as safely as possible in the conditions. "

Because of the severe weather conditions the following schools have taken the decision to close:

- Greenmead Primary School – transport problems mean insufficient staff available

- John Paul II - transport problems mean insufficient staff available

- High View Primary School - transport problems mean insufficient staff available

- Ronald Ross Primary School - transport problems mean insufficient staff available

- Sir James Barrie Primary School – heating system breakdown

While the extreme weather continues parents are advised to check with their schools directly before travelling.
