I realised that you meant 19th century, which made me think of the Opium Wars against China, which ended with:- "The Convention of Peking [1860] forced China to legalise the opium trade, open all of China to foreign merchants and missionaries, and cede the Kowloon Peninsula to Britain." "In China, these wars are seen as the start of the "Century of Humiliation," a period of forced "unequal treaties" that undermined Chinese sovereignty and eventually led to the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912." When I was quite young, I assumed that these Opium Wars were fought by Britain to stop China from SUPPLYING opium. |
