Worth looking at various scenarios.  Who knows what the unintentional consequences of this action could be. Apparently Venezuela is a supplier of oil to China.  Will there be pressure from the US to halt this supply? If that happens, what will China's response be. Probably stop supplies of rare earth's to the US, but that's just a guess by commentators. 

I suspect uncertainty in oil supplies might speed up the drive to renewable energy.  That could be good for the climate? I suppose you'd call that "whataboutery", but that's how innovations and strategies get generated - what about this, let's try that, let's think about this ... :-)
