Hello Sue, I do not think it is as simple as your suggestion, but I do agree that the war must end. Ukraine was known as Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukraine SSR) until the USSR dissolved in August 1991.  They held a referendum in December 1991 and 92.3% of Ukranians voted in favour of independence. That was only 34 years ago and many have very vivid memories of living under the USSR, the poverty they endured and the number of famines they suffered.  It was one of the poorest countries in the USSR in spite of being its bread basket. I would not take Zelensky's use of the word "dignity" that loosely.  The loss of honour and respect is a very difficult pill to swallow for them all. Of course, perestroika and glasnost were the main causes for the fall of the USSR under Gorbachov, which Putin absolutely hated. I cannot imagine how downtrodden the Ukranians must feel now.  Two US Republican Presidents (Reagan and Bush) were very involved in the tearing down of the Berlin Wall with the consequent collapse of the USSR.  Now, another US Republican President is giving away Ukraine's land and rights as demanded by Putin in a so-called peace agreement concocted by Trump and Putin (well written by Putin and issued by Trump) and no input by Ukraine.
