Oh dear, what a catalogue of misunderstandings, to put it politely. In no particular order: - Reopening Hammersmith Bridge to motor traffic was estimated back in January to cost £250 million; no doubt that has increased greatly since then. Does anyone seriously think that wasting this kind of amount on traffic would be a wise use of the money? - It's simply false to claim that LTNs do little useful and in many cases cause chaos; there is plenty of evidence that they reduce casualties and even crime; despite wild claims they have no effect on emergency vehicles; and there is little indication of traffic being simply displaced onto boundary roads. - cars may still be the main form of transport for many, but over half the households in Inner London have no access to a car. - worst, though, is the sad victimology expressed in the claim of "the persistent persecution and exploitation of vehicle owners." Really? But at least Alan didn't parrot the silly "war on motorists" line... Finally, it's nice to see Claire expressing concern about pollution, though the obvious solution - reducing car use - doesn't seem to occur: motor traffic is now the main source of pollution in London - and, incidentally, the biggest contributor to climate change in the UK. |
