Mr Grimston, there are indeed a great many people who have happily chosen to live in what you refer to, rather patronisingly if I may say so, "dismal corners" of London.  Young people who grow up in Putney, frequently move to East London, because it is cheaper, more culturally diverse and vibrant than SW15.   "The Courts" are expensive.  Are you really suggesting that more Council tax revenue should be spent on lawyers to elicit whether the Council is doing its job? Adam has already highlighted the difficulties faced by ordinary people who wish to put themselves forward as Independents. There are financial alternatives to Icelandic banks, not least the central government emergency funding available to you in the form of the Priority Schools Building Programme.  You have yet to answer my repeated questions as to why this was never sought, as an alternative to selling Elliott's land to your preferred bidders and party donors - Barratt Homes.  You sought PSBP funding for Chestnut Grove, why not Elliott? Four star Adult social care at the Westleigh Lodge Care Home for the elderly with special needs has been eradicated, as has the Chellow Dene mental health hostel, sold to a private school, both of which would have made an ideal site for a primary school. When we questioned WBC's Financial Director at the Town Hall meeting which you and I attended, he "did not have the paperwork to hand" (it was a Financial Scrutiny meeting after all) and is on tape "speaking off the top of his head".  The sum of £26.9m was rounded up to £30m, and I have to say, we, and the journalists present found the maths rather vague, in some cases withheld, but always loaded in favour of a sell-off. Low Council tax would appear to be a placebo,, and like any sugared pill has failed to address the underlying investment required to maintain a Grade II listed schools and bridge.  The Library has been outsourced, and the museum only saved by private philanthropy.  Meanwhile, according to the Wandsworth Guardian, Sir Paul Martin, your CEO received a 60% pay rise over a two year period.  He now earns nearly double the salary of our Prime Minister. I am certainly not criticising the teaching in our primary schools, but as we all know, the affluent parents who frequent them, often pay for intensive private coaching in year six to prepare for entry to the private system at 11.  Those on lower incomes whose children learn in classes of 30 may not achieve the seemingly stellar results achieved in more affluent catchment areas.  Neither can their parents afford to take them to Kumon Maths or the Natural History museum for projects. It is inaccurate and disingenuous to imply that everything is perfectly rosy in the Brighter Borough because no one has been courageous enough to put up as an Independent.  Even if five brave souls did as you suggested, they would still be outvoted by the large majority that your party has.  This forum is rapidly becoming a Party Political Broadcast for the Tories, with endless denigration of other parties.  Given that all parties are governed by a global economic climate, I would prefer to see a more balanced variety of fiscal meteorologists at our Town Hall to allowed non-partisan varied thinking on important policies, which adheres to advice given in National Guidelines.
