Firstly, Richard - congratulations! Thamesfield would benefit hugely from a Green candidate, and it would be good to have Green candidates as Conservators. Hopefully they would not spend over £7,000pa on "entertainment". I sincerely wish you every success, and sadly cannot offer my vote as I live up the Hill.
Andy - I do "get it" and have no "master plan" but was simply imagining a local Council free of political affiliations. I tend to vote for the person, not the party, and have seen on many occasions block voting by party members according to Westminster's principals, rather than their own. When the party majority is as overwhelming as WBC's there is no room for alternative thinking, and unpopular projects get railroaded through. Effectively, a dictatorship.
Why can't Mr Grimston just stand as Mr Grimston, rather than as a Tory candidate? I respect his Science far more than his politics, however his politics have compromised his logic with regard to Elliott, which is why I would not vote for him.
A Councillor from Cumbria has very different issues to a Councillor in Peckham, yet still has to adhere to "party principals" - this what I am questioning. Let the great and good battle it out in Westminster, but let's keep local politics local and focussed on what local people need and want, rather than manifestos created in SW1 whose affordable housing is offered by the Dolphin Square Foundation. It is the relaxation of planning laws by central government that have caused the problems we all face now in Wandsworth, with our special relationship with the Mayor and Mr Lister further complicating what should be politically impartial decisions made with foresight and compassion for the local community, not how votes will be gained in four year's time.
Zac Goldsmith voted against his party regarding "gagging laws" - while Justine Greening yet again was absent. I respect him for holding true to his own principals.
Fourteen years ago, you could say our family voted with our feet, and set off to explore life in a benign dictatorship in the UAE. A Ruling family, and unelected Municipality with well remunerated experts in their field giving impartial advice which is carefully absorbed and implemented. It works remarkably well, and long-term planning can occur without the interference of hustings, televised debates and political U-turns. When mistakes are made, they can be quickly rectified. I am not promoting any particular system, because given human nature, no "system" is perfect, but I have got used to a society which is prepared to listen to good advice, do things differently, and experiment.
Our "system" is outdated, and most of the electorate haven't got a clue who or what they are voting for. They tick the box and walk away, or increasingly, fail to tick it at all. A French politician observed recently that the British public were incapable of voting in European elections because they didn't understand them, and she may well have a point.
How much money has been wasted on planning for the Blades? How much money wasted at Putney Hospital? It might have better spent on experts appointed by Planners whose opinions and expertise was actually listened to.
Experts are consulted in Planning Applications and then ignored. The Environment Agency, Thames Water, English Heritage, Sport England, the Putney Society, the 20th Century Society, Gold medal-winning Olympians, Badger Protection League, independent surveyors, architects, ex-pupils and teachers - all consulted at Elliott, but ignored. When an opinion is a vote in your favour at the ballot box, it is taken very seriously, when cosmetically requested to tick the boxes in Planning, it is completely ignored, because the decision was made long before the consultation, from Westminster. |
