I agree with Lucille.  Political affiliations and greed have got in the way of good governance.  The WBC Tory majority is simply too great to allow balanced debate and voting.  The Council has been in power for far too long, 35 years, and has become smug and dictatorial.  Simon Hogg has hit the nail on the head - we are battling against property developers in our own back yard, who placate us with low council tax.

The UK is heading for disaster, having pinned in its hopes on an ever-rising property market, without any backup.  Having looked at the census, there are more people in Estate Agency than manufacturing in this borough.  Few Brits can afford property in SW15, and reliance upon the Asian market is fragile as a Chinese property crash looms, which will have repercussions around the world, not just SW15.

Looking at the papers this morning is pretty depressing.  Prince William has hosted a charity bash at Windsor on behalf of the Royal Marsden.  Guests include the usual suspects, drugged up Cara and Kate (Moss, not the other one who wisely did not attend) Ralph Lauren, and various New York "Philanthropists"  not a nurse or doctor in sight.  Last night, a Scientology advert appeared in the middle of Coronation Street, giving a whole new meaning to cult viewing.  Then there's the AstraZenica selloff, where Scientists and Business experts, as well as the Swedes are saying don't do it, while our politicians are pimping out the future of UK Scientific research.  Will Pfizer honour their promises to keep us on the cutting edge of research?  Given that the last bit of R&D Pfizer carried out was Viagra, 25 years ago, I doubt it.  Then there's a story about Mr Farage, who has even managed to annoy Marine Le Pen.

I served my country for ten years in the NHS.  We worked hard, paid all our taxes, did everything right, volunteered for causes we believed in, and gave to charity. I just could't see what we were getting in return, whilst those who cheated and broke the law seemed to be rewarded.  Kate Moss became an icon.  Would a single mother snorting coke on camera in Tower Hamlets have received the same adulation?  Those who abused children on an industrial scale were honoured by the Queen. 

You are taxed when you live and taxed when you die.  Rising house prices meant inheritance tax worries for those who just wanted a nice semi in Southfields.  Politics and Religion have always relied on fear to control the bewildered herd, and what I notice most on returning home is how fearful everyone is.  A nation paralysed by worry and the inability to turn to their leaders to help them.

Our NHS and Education system are run by men who have never worked in a hospital or a school, who override continually the expert advice of others.  Job insecurity, short-term and zero-hours contracts have stifled creativity and optimism in the very people we rely on to forge the path ahead.  A young graduate told me recently that working in London was like having a loaded gun held to her head.  Help to buy, like student loans have trapped a generation in debt.

We have trashed the environment by ignoring the warnings of experts and cutting numbers at the Environment Agency to the bone.  We have built on floodplains and abandoned those who are suffering as a result.

We are lied to constantly, swine flu was going to wipe us out in our millions, so were weapons of mass destruction, and when the Millennium bug failed to bite, we decided to vote with our feet.  I love my country, but it hasn't loved me, or my children back.  I see a once proud nation cowering under American dictatorship, sending young men in to battle in Iraq and Helmand, whilst funding Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, where our taxes end up in the hands of the wrong people, because of more corrupt politicians.

People with real jobs are constantly appraised and monitored, often too target driven and anxious to perform.  Let us apply the same expectations to our politicians, actions speak louder than words, and good management starts at the top.
