I too am very puzzled by our High Street. Several betting shops, and TWO Cashinos? Lots of opticians and plenty of sweat-shop clothing for the under-thirties. Given the existence of Top Shop, River Island and TK Maxx, I was also surprised to see that H&M will be moving in. Where do mature men shop, my husband can only get the basics at M&S or bus it up to Peter Jones. Do we need two Boots and a Superdrug? I thought it was quite difficult to turn shops into eateries, and indeed it does seem that we have more than our fare share of cafes and bars. Not complaining, just curious. I suppose there has to be a balance to keep punters around after the shops have shut. I wonder how retail spaces are allocated. Is it first come first served, or whoever has the most cash and influence? I always thought demographic surveys were done to dictate the spending power of any given district, and with houses selling for millions now, and property prices rising I would be interested to know how PHS has evolved so differently to other areas. |
