> Equally/more important for me is the number of aircraft movements at the airport, which the inspector at the T5 inquiry said must be limited to 480,000 a year because to exceed this would be intolerable for communities under the flight path. If the expansionist lobby gets mixed mode permanently, this would be brushed aside, and that really would ruin our lives in Putney. That scenario is looking increasingly likely. With the reshuffle and the growing pressure to do "something" in the short-to-medium term rather than waiting 10 years for R3 or 15+ for a new airport, increasing the movements limit is the only other option on the table. According to the experts, introduction of permanent mixed mode would accommodate upwards of 60,000 extra movements per year, and of course would mean an end to respite. In parallel with mixed mode, increasing the length of the operating day would allow a further increase, the numbers dependent on how much of the night period was eaten into. The next 12 months are going to be a bumpy ride. |
